Introducting Notebooks and Pencils (Maybe)

Two weeks ago I activated listings for 15 categories of vintage American made pencils and 11 of my Vari-Dot notebooks. June will mark a year that I have spent prototyping these notebooks. I have given away as many as I now have available for sale and I have scrapped a fair number in the research and development process.

1Q 2018 Progress Report

Two weeks ago I sat down and wrote out a To-Do list for Neat and Keen. The following week I had off from my regular job and planned to accomplish it all. However, I always underestimate how long a task will take and how many other distractions will arise.

Custom Printer Catch

The biggest accomplishment is that I finally used up all 1000 sheets of 13 x 19 inch 80# Lynx paper. I really like this paper. It’s become the standard for all my notebook prototypes. The remaining paper yielded enough for 10 more Vari-Dot notebooks and one lined notebook. The lines in this one notebook are dotted (not dashed) lines and similarly very light in pigment just like the Vari-Dot ruling. Continue reading

Super Happy Handmade Art Funtime Birthday Sale!

Well, it’s that time of the year again. On Sunday I will turn another year older. I remember a few years ago on my birthday it was when I really made the decision to hit this art thing harder than I had been. And I can honestly say I have been doing that. I’m taking a long weekend off from my “regular” job to add new items to the Storenvy shop and hopefully move some art into some homes (maybe yours!) during my birthday sale. If stuff doesn’t look like it’s on sale it’s because everything has free shipping in the US. (Reduced shipping for my international patrons too!)

Here’s some of┬áthe new pieces added to the store.

The Pop Art Allusions Test Print

Pop Art Allusions Test Print. Image size 18 x 24 inches. Paper size 19 x 25 inches. 6-color test print on 100# Cougar

This first one isn’t super special and is the most affordable of the bunch. It’s the only remaining copy I know of that doesn’t feature the brown ink (the final color) on it. What’s more, there was a huge screw up when I started printing the second layer of yellow on the guitar (which was meant to mute the orange layer that was printed on top of the first layer). This is one of my earlier prints and even though it is technically flawed, I kind of love the texture of ripples and dried up bubbles in the too thick ink covering the surface. You can see closeups in the store. Continue reading

Side Project: Hand Altered and Screen Printed MUJI Notebooks

Muji A6 Notebook with updated cover

Muji A6 Notebook with updated cover

The thing with doing art is it requires a good amount of focus. It’s easy to get sucked into side projects and I have been trying to get away from ┬áhaving too many things going on at once. Sometimes it is unavoidable. In the case of the motorcycle print I simply don’t have the tools and ink on hand to do the whole job right now. I could write an update about the fine tuning of pixels in Photoshop, but there really isn’t much to see. So over the weekend I set to work on a quick prototyping of a custom MUJI A6 Blank Notebook.
